BLESSED
MARIE POUSSEPIN - SOCIAL APOSTLE OF CHARITY
Foundress
of the Dominican Sisters of the Presentation
"The Community will not confine itself to closing in upon itself the
abundance it has received from heaven. It will take the means to spread it
abroad generously and abundantly."
Marie Poussepin was born
on October 14, 1653 in Dourdan, France. At a very young age, Marie developed a
passion for charitable works as she accompanied her mother to visit the sick
poor. Her ensuing compassion led her to found a community of the Third Order of
St. Dominic to care for the sick and to educate girls "to keep the zeal
for the education of the poor, the spirit of poverty, and love of work".
From her baptism until her death, Marie Poussepin enjoyed a continuous and
uniform growth in spiritual life.
Marie possessed a distinctly unique charism - one that she shared with St.
Dominic - a harmonious unity between being and acting: to experience the Word
of God and from this experience, to announce the compassion of God through
loving service to those in need.
Her remarkable work - a lifetime of loving service - has been the inspiration
for thousands of Dominican Sisters of the Presentation
throughout the world.
