Our Presence in Rhode Island

Since 1982, our sisters have been present in the Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island, serving its people. Involved in pastoral ministry in one capacity or another at the parish, Campus Ministry, or diocesan level, we have worked with the most needy and vulnerable in this state: the frail and sick elderly; parents and single moms struggling, working two jobs to provide for the basic needs of their families; new immigrants seeking a new life, yet faced with no work, no security and no voice; children of poverty, often without food or a stable home environment, facing the challenges of the educational system; and young people, searching for meaning and hope.
We have tried to help people of all ages and cultures to find Christ in their lives and in caring communities, and to prepare some of them to minister to each other.

Providence, RI

Our sisters bring a religious presence to a neighborhood fraught with violence, drugs and poverty. Committed to witnessing to the value of community and prayer life, they draw strength from their personal relationship with the Lord and with each other to respond to the needs around them.

The challenge of their inner city parish is to meet the needs of a large population of new Spanish-speaking immigrants, especially from the Dominican Republic and other Latin American countries, without neglecting and integrating the needs of a smaller population of English speaking parishioners composed of Afro-Americans, Cambodians and Anglos. Confronted by this challenge, the sisters strive to be open to the diversity lived in this community of faith as they look for ways to draw its people closer together.

Involved in care for the elderly, primary education, religious education, youth ministry and the liturgical life of the parish, the sisters are slowly making their presence known and experienced in the area. Attention to their neighbors and involvement in neighborhood meetings, open to the children and youth around them, they witness to the Gospel through a "service of charity" which reaches out in care to others. Believing in and valuing their mission of presence to others, each day through the simplicity and joy of their lives, they proclaim their love for Christ and for all their brothers and sisters.
