We began
our mission in Korea in June of 1995. This new land, new country, new culture
and traditions, filled our sisters with a sense of excitement and adventure. The
first few years were primarily focused on learning the language and the culture,
and finding the right place to live.
Two years ago we were able to buy a two-story building with a large beautiful
garden filled with trees, flowers, fruits and vegetables. It even has a small
swimming pool. This property was just right for our new ministry: a Day Care for
the children from working families in the area and room for us to live.
The first floor is our Day Care, which we opened on March 5, 1999 with 15
children - today there are more than 80 children ranging from 3-7 years old!
Precious, precious little ones ready to learn, to sing and to dance! The sisters
work with lay teachers as they create a fun, educational environment for the
children.
The second floor is the convent where the sisters live. At present we are four
sisters in Korea, representing the diversity of our international congregation.
All work hard to increate their knowledge of the language and the culture.
Slowly they are adapting the ways and style of the Korea culture, integrating
them in our daily life. They have become experts with chopsticks!, readily
remove their shoes while in the house, and with comfort sit on the floor to
pray. With hope for the future, we await new vocations to join us.
Of all the various experiences the sisters have had in Korea these last six
years, the most heartwarming have been the gracious warmth, generosity and
welcome of the Korean people. Their attentiveness, kindness and concern for the
sisters have been extraordinary. And it spite of the difficulties of adjusting
to a new language and a new culture, their acceptance and presence to the
sisters makes it all worthwhile.
