Our Presence in Texas

Brownsville:
La Frontera
Our sisters have been in South Texas in the Diocese of Brownsville known as the
"Rio Grande Valley" since 1970. We came to serve in Health
Clinics and parishes. We first settled in Raymondville and then we served in
LaSara, Hargill, Edcouch and now presently we are in Brownsville which is
a border town, resting between Mexico and the USA. Daily immigrants from Mexico
and Central America walk across the bridge or swim the river seeking a better
way of life.
The
population of Brownsville is a mixture of Mexican-Americans who have become
inculturated in American society, new immigrants seeking the basis needs for
survival, and other Texans who have settled in the beauty and simplicity of this
area. The warmth, generosity and hospitality of this Mexican-American culture
combined with its bi-lingual reality, provides the environment through which our
sisters share our "service of charity", through ministry in the
parishes and education.
Through their work in the formation of basic Christian communities (comunidades
de base) and pastoral home visitations, the sisters learn first hand the daily
challenges that fall upon the people. Concern for families and their needs on
all levels move the sisters to pray with and for them, to seek appropriate
responses to their social ills, and to share the joy and hope of life.
Involvement in education was one of the primary goals of our Foundress, Marie
Poussepin, since it enables the sisters to transmit Christian values as we
help to shape both the mind and heart of children entrusted to our care.
Through
their different ministries, through the meeting and inter-mingling of two
cultures which strengthen and shape each other, the sisters witness to the
Gospel of love through their care and compassion toward all the people them meet
each day.
Here
in the Valley, involvement with the children and their families becomes a great
source of joy and hope for the future.
