Our Presence in Washington, DC
Rosary House of Studies
Founded in our Nation's
capitol in 1955 as a residence for our sisters and college students in the area.
Committed to building a community life in the inner city of Washington, D.C., we
strive to witness to the Gospel through our service of charity as we share our
home with others. We provide a Christian environment of love and support for
students who need affordable housing while studying and working to pay their
school tuition and living expenses.
As we tried to meet the housing needs of students, we could not avoid seeing the
rising need of other women in the city. More than ever, there are homeless
women, with or without children. These women are of all ages. Some were homeless
themselves as children and do not have the skills for independent living. Other
women have been caught in the "abuse" system of drugs and /or
alcohol.
With the help of specific agencies, we decided to share our home with a limited
number of homeless women and their children. In addition, we offer foster care
to adolescent girls who cannot live at home because of various difficulties. The
girls, the women and children are housed, fed and loved for whom they are: our
brothers and sisters.
The experience of community living with the sisters, the students and these
homeless families and adolescent girls has been a good experience for all. We,
the sisters live our "service of charity" in a very concrete way as we
touch the reality of the world around us and witness to God's Love and the
dignity and self worth of all peoples. For the students, it has been an
opportunity to open their eyes to see another aspect of our world, to appreciate
what they have, and for some, tutoring these children has become a form of
ministry. For the homeless women and girls who have had such misfortune in their
lives, they see that there is another way, that others care, and that there is
hope and support as they get a new start in life.
We strive to live our vowed life in such a way that as a community we promote
the God given dignity of every human being. Together with others we help to bind
up the many wounds inflicted by an indifferent society. Through the charism of
Marie Poussepin, we share our "service of charity" in simplicity and
joy.
